The Reconstructive Urology Unit at Shohada-e-Tajrish Hospital (RUDTH), affiliated with Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, is recognized as the first and foremost subspecialty center for reconstructive urology in Iran. For over 30 years, this unit has served as the national referral center for urethroplasty, providing care to complex and challenging cases from across Iran, neighboring countries, and even parts of Europe. Many of these patients have previously undergone unsuccessful procedures and are now treated at this center based on international standards.
The unit is led by Professor Jalil Hosseini, a distinguished academic and one of the pioneers of reconstructive urologic surgery in Iran and the region. With more than three decades of invaluable experience in patient care and the education of numerous generations of specialists, Professor Hosseini has played a key role in advancing the science and practice of this field.
Equipped with a highly experienced team of specialists, well-trained staff, and state-of-the-art medical technology, the unit offers a comprehensive array of diagnostic and therapeutic services. The core focus is on reconstructive surgeries, including the treatment of urethral strictures, correction of congenital anomalies such as hypospadias, repair of trauma-related injuries, and reconstruction of the genitourinary tract.
In line with its commitment to advancing medical education, the unit has, over the past eleven years, trained fellows in reconstructive urology selected from among certified urologists. Graduates from the universities of Mashhad, Ahvaz, Tabriz, and Shiraz are now actively contributing to patient care across the country. In addition, urologists from other cities, including Isfahan and Mashhad, have participated in short-term training programs at this center.

Reconstructive Urology Fellowship
Formal Reconstructive Urology fellowship in Shohada Tajrish Hospital is an 18 months fulltime training course. There is ability of 3-6month rotation in one of the most well-known reconstructive urology centers in the world.
Shorter period training courses based on trainee request is reviewing by the university.
During the fellowship course, fellows involve in simultaneous hands-on reconstructive urology training and research activities, inpatient and outpatient clinical management, journal clubs, grand rounds, congress presentations and plastic surgery, urodynamic, pelvic floor surgeries rotation.
Shohada Tajrish Hospital is the only main referral center of reconstructive genitourinary surgery in Iran and also some countries in neighborhood, with 30 years’ experience in this field. There is high demand of complicated(most) and simple surgeries in this hospital and despite a more than active operating room, unfortunately waiting list is long.
Surgical procedures were categorized according to complexity taking account of the frequency of which a certain procedure is performed including:
Urethroplasty:
Simple: simple anastomotic bulbar Urethroplasty, buccal mucosal graft substitution, urethrocutaneous fistula repair,
Complex: penile/ full length Urethroplasty, trauma related reconstruction, U.R.Fistula, Epispadias repair
Urinary sphincter:
Simple: primary bulbar artificial urinary sphincter(AUS)
Complex: redo bulbar AUS, bladder neck AUS
Penile prosthesis:
noninflatable semirigid devices, and inflatable devices and redo and replacement surgeries
Peyronie’s disease: Different types of surgical repair
Hypospadias especially in adults: Different types repair
There are many opportunities for the fellow, and we fully support exploring new avenues for research based on the fellow’s desires/goals. Approximately 20-30% effort is allocated for research.
